Two figures silhouetted against a twilight sky with a gradient of pink to purple, walking on a slope beside a large tree.

sweet talk

Poetry by Caroline Fernandez

With you, it’s a slow
lengthened release
the way syllables link
and vowels strip
the consonants down
to the bare meaning
between us.

When you are near, your husky
drawl lingers in the air
as we open each other up, our jar
of sweet nectar and musk
the humming language
that bonds us.

By day, we are wordless
shuttered by the piercing white sun
banished till dusk
I still hear you
resounding in the silence
In your absence, I make
sounds that remind me
of conversations our bodies have had.

By night
our lips part again
and find each other
delicate wings
seeking the same petal
to rest upon.
